Meta-analysis

Committed to superior meta-analysis

A meta-analysis combines data from multiple studies to draw stronger, more reliable conclusions. By pooling results from different trials and case series you see the big picture rather than relying on one study.

In podiatric medicine and surgery, that lets us:

  • Compare the effectiveness of different surgical techniques.
  • Identify which orthotic or rehabilitation approaches deliver the best outcomes.
  • Evaluate the safety of new devices and materials.
  • Guide evidence-based practice and continuing education.

Evidence worth knowing

Minimally invasive vs. open surgery for hallux valgus

Several recent meta-analyses compare minimally invasive bunion procedures to open techniques. Findings vary by analysis, but many report faster recovery, higher patient satisfaction, and similar radiographic correction for selected cases with minimally invasive approaches. Use this to discuss when MIS is supported by evidence and when open techniques remain preferable.

ESWT vs. corticosteroid injections for plantar fasciitis

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses show extracorporeal shock wave therapy is generally at least as effective as steroid injections for mid-term pain and function, and may have better durability and safety for some patients. Useful when discussing non-operative options and device technologies.

Diabetic foot ulcer adjunctive therapies

Meta-analyses of DFU care highlight benefit signals for negative pressure wound therapy on healing outcomes, and network meta-analyses compare skin substitutes and biomaterials against standard care. Relevant to wound-care devices, off-loading methods, and product selection.

Off-loading methods for diabetic foot ulcers

Comparative meta-analyses show total contact casting improves healing versus removable walkers and conventional care in many studies — practical evidence for recommending off-loading strategies.

Acute Achilles tendon rupture — surgical vs. non-operative

Larger meta-analyses and recent network meta-analyses indicate surgical repair reduces re-rupture risk but may increase some complication rates, while functional outcomes are frequently similar. Useful for operative decision-making and device trade-offs.

Prevalence and epidemiology of hallux valgus

Population meta-analyses estimate hallux valgus prevalence — helpful for setting scope when framing which topics deserve attention.
